Trent Reznor seems to always have something up his sleeve... and this time, its an astounding 405 gigabytes in size. In his now-traditional "F*** the record labels!"-style, the frontman/soul of Nine Inch Nails has released a massive collection of 1080p multi-angle footage from three concerts in the Lights in the Sky tour.
I'm pretty excited about this, as I do have the spare room on one of my computers to hold all this footage. I think its a great opportunity for fans to put together something unique and creative with material given to them. Reznor has been known to give things like albums and multi-track files before, but a volume of data this large is COMPLETELY unheard of in the entertainment industry. To even get STARTED on working with this material, you've first gotta wait until you've got it downloaded. At the rate my download is going, I'll be getting to watch footage sometime in late February or early March.
The timing of the release is also interesting, as the costs of Blu-ray players and burners is dropping, and this provides a medium which can handle the kinds of capacity that will be needed to hold a complete concert (and some multi-angle options). Between the 'official' hd content, as well as higher-quality segments filmed by fans at some 'relaxed security' venues, there are the makings of an incredible concert experience.
Depending on how long my current work schedule lasts (hours have been slashed due to cutbacks), I may have alot of free time on my hands... If this is the case, I'm hoping to do some video editing of my own. I might even invest in some decent software to do it with, we'll see how things go.
