Hiccups on the path to greatness...
Published on April 2, 2007 By CerebroJD In Docks
Well, we're now into the beta testing phase for the popular graphical shortcut and taskbar replacement, ObjectDock!  However, with all developement, there are growing pains as well.  Its best to get them all gathered together here in one place, where the developer can pop in and keep us all up to speed on changes and fixes.

Without further ado, I declare this thread open for business!

I just downloaded the 1.6 beta-the recycle bin issue is fixed-now why do the entry mouseover labels appear under or partially obscurred by tabbed dock itself?

** Always on Top Issue **

I tried unloading WindowBlinds and rerunning the IE7 tests, and I'm getting the almost the same results. But without running WindowBlinds the results are now not %100 consistent.

Without running WindowBlinds:
If I use F11 to go back and forth from Full Screen in IE7, (I paused about 10 seconds between switches just in case it was some type of timing thing) sometimes the docks behave correctly and sometimes the don't. Maybe 50% of the time it worked correctly. Very strange....

Out of the types of docks that I have, the zoomer dock with just the running tasks seemed to stay on top in full screen more than the others. It might not be relevant, but something that I noticed. (Now they are not all acting the same i.e. all of the docks on top or all of them on the bottom)

Just another data point.....
With another application, FastStone Image Viewer 3.0 (http://www.faststone.org) the docks are always on top when viewing images in full screen or slideshow mode. The docks "Always on Top" worked correctly in the previous versions. So the new methods are now keeping the docks always on top even in full screen mode.

Thanks for hanging in there on this issue, I know it must be a pain to track down....

Hey Jeff; just tried the refresh, nice job fixing the attention effects.

New issue; I have My Documents, Videos, Pictures and Music on my zoomer dock, set to default icons so IconPackager icons will be applied. In 1.6 beta the default folder icon from the IP package I am using is being applied to all instead of the specific icon for each.

For those with weather docklet code issues, I had a problem with this at first. For most weather docklets/widgets I would use Peterborough,Canada; for this I did a search at accuweather and found that it was city/province not city/country for Canada, so it was Peterborough,ON. Even spelling out Ontario did not work, it had to be the short form.
Hope this helps someone.

I have the same issue as MySecret, no system tray icons. I just can't get them to show. On XP SP2 as well.
Even though I rarely need the tray, I still need it accessible.

Ditto for me. XP SP2.

When I updated initially it was working fine, then I read in the history about it using a new trayserver exe & so I fiddled with the MCP settings in SDC which seems to have broken it.

Right now I have both "Enable MCP notification area support" and "Enable MCP SmartStartup" checked and rebooted but te tray doesn't show. I have also tried with both unchecked and no result. What should the settings be for MCP in SDC to use the new OD+ ?

I'd recommend disabling MCP if you don't need it for ObjectBar (which will be updated also to use this new module) - the new OD+ doesn't use it.

thomassen: alright, i got the inspiration to do it fixed for the next refresh that we have which should be sometime probably start of/early next week. added lightweight code to detect if an icon has been crappified by explorer and if so it loads the regular size version. no more mini-icons

Cavan1: good callout. Special folders should always get their special icons, not live icons. Found a way to detect that, so that too will be fixed for the next refresh. Thanks much for the tip, I wouldn't have noticed that one

By the way! If anyone is getting any crashing at any point e.g. I've heard a couple people say they had a problem on dragging something off...please please forward over the saved bug log to stardock support with "v1.6" somewhere in the subject!! Thanks! (If you forgot to save it, there's a chance it could be hanging out in your ObjectDock install folder if you know where to find it. Vista may stop it due to the whole UAC bit, but otherwise it was designed to keep the last few saved automatically)

A note about Always On Top problems while I'm at it...I definitely do see it with IE7 going fullscreen with WindowBlinds enabled...probably because its not actually filling the screen. WB bug I suppose. But at any rate, Explorer doesn't seem to hide either. So perhaps I'm doing the technically "correct" thing there. Bleh.

I'm also having the same problems with the Weather Docklet. And when I added a separator and tried to switch an icon on the other side of the separator the icon disappeared. It however reappeared after I restarted my computer. I tried putting in my zip code, city name (even tried all the major cities and zip code in Ca that I can think of) and I still get a location not found. I have OD plus unblocked from my firewall.

By the way, regarding Weather retrieval...that's definitely something that has the most kinks in it. Not in ObjectDock itself but in our new feed from AccuWeather which we've set up, its still pretty new. Its not quite forgiving, and sometimes looks for specific things. E.g. state names can't be spelled out currently, places in Canada need the providence appreviation not country name, some sites are just plain missing from the feed data, etc, particularly overseas. Also sometimes we've had server problems so reliably isn't always 100%. We're getting closer though. So yeah, our NetDev crew is working on it, we're definitely using this new system for more than just ObjectDock.

Additionally, there is a check to make sure that the files are valid for security/protection reasons. In the current version if those checks fail the whole process just ends up failing and it just comes back with "Location not found", since it didn't get any usable data. But, I am able to detect if it failed for security/protection-violation reasons...and I wonder if that's happened to anyone. Any tiny change/download-error/install-error in any involved executable file could render the file digital signature invalid and thus cause a problem there. At any rate, the build for the next refresh notifies the user of this if this happens ("Might be an install problem, please try reinstalling"/etc) instead of just saying "Location not found".

I use tabbed docks 99% of the time and there are no problems so far. Love the weather!

Love you man!

I'm trying to get weather info for London. But I can't get any results.
I'm wondering if it's because I'm not giving the correct country. Is it:
London, England
London, United Kingdom
London, Great Britan
London, UK
London, GB

Too many damn options to refer to this country.... and I can't get any of them to work...
on Apr 04, 2007
hm... "London, United Kingdom" worked now. Didn't yesterday...
go figure....
United Kingdom it is then!

Just had a though: It'd be nice to be able to click the flyouts from the weather docklet which would bring you to a webpage with more details for that selected day.
